This morning while watching the news, attack advertisements ran against both Ken Buck and Michael Bennet, the two main party Colorado senate candidates running in the next election. Ken Buck is a Tea Party supported Republican. Michael Bennet is a Democrat who was appointed to the senate by Governor Bill Ritter.
I am personally horrified by the prospect of Ken Buck being elected. He is a right-wing example of what is wrong with extremist politicians. He wants to dismantle all progress toward universal health care. He wants to make abortion and many forms of birth control illegal. He is even against abortion in the event of rape or incest. Imagine what it would be like for a woman to have to bear the child of her attacker.
Aside from my political beliefs, I am disgusted by both candidates and their supporters. This extends to nearly all major contested government offices. I am sickened by negative advertising.
People should be elected to office based on their merits, not twisted versions of their downfalls. For example, Michael Bennet has been a successful business leader and worked with teachers to amend a merit based compensation package for the Denver Public Schools. Ken Buck is well educated and had a successful career in the United States Attorney’s office and as the DA for Weld County. But you wouldn’t know that from the commercials.
Here is an ad from the Bennet camp:
I couldn’t find a Ken Buck ad on YouTube to share, but I find both sides to be demonstrating politics at its worst. This is why I hesitate to give money to a campaign. I would hate to have my money to go pay for this garbage. I would rather volunteer my time and vote to support the best candidate for the job.
